SUMMARY:Ghost Hardware[Unhackathon]: Technology in Public Spaces
DESCRIPTION:\n\nHosted by: .zipper Louisa Teichmann in collaboration with A
nouk Geenen\, Julieta Matos Castano and Esmeralde Marsman\n\nUnlike a trad
itional hackathon\, this Ghost Hardware session is collaborative rather th
an competitive and without winners\, focussing on skill sharing and experi
mentation. The design challenges are based on needs and ideas voiced by pa
rticipants during the Technology in Public Spaces unconference held in Jan
uary with one central question:\n\nHow can we re-use existing public soft-
and hardware to better connect local communities?\n\nParticipants will wo
rk in small teams to rapidly prototype 'ghost hardware': speculative\, low
-threshold technologies that intervene in public spaces. All prototypes wi
ll be presented at the Speculative Futures Evening on 2 April\, hosted by
Anouk Geenen and Julieta Matos Castano at the Municipality of Rotterdam. D
uring this follow-up event\, each prototype will form the basis of a specu
lative fiction scenario or use case.\n\nParticipants join one of three tea
 ms (4 people per team):\n\nִׄ˚ • ˖ ⭑ Team One: Sensor Network to C
ommunication Mesh ₊ ⭒ *ೃ༄\nExplore how environmental sensors can f
orm a local messaging network focused on neighbourhood safety. When someon
e feels unsafe\, they can input information into a close by sensor to aler
 t others nearby.\n\nTech suggestions: LoRa\, Reticulum\, Sensors\, Arduino
 .\n\n ִׄ˚ • ˖ ⭑ Team Two: Poetic Archives ₊ ⭒ *ೃ༄\nReclaim
public spaces as shared archives by combining physical interventions with
digital mapping. Add objects\, markers or prompts to public spaces to all
ow people to share knowledge and experiences.\n\nTech suggestions: OpenStr
eetMap or Google Maps as a gateway to alternative mapping. Pole-mounts\, g
 eocaches for physical placement.\n\n ִׄ˚ •  ࣪˖ ⭑ Team Three: Co
nnection Game ₊ ⭒ *ೃ༄\nMake invisible questions visible. When ente
ring a public or liminal space\, such as a tram\, you will see anonymous\,
asynchronous questions left by others\, inviting gentle connection and re
 ducing loneliness.\n\nTech suggestions: Wi-Fi hotspot archives\, geofencin
 g\, NFC/RFID cards\, LED screens.\n\n
