Neocities Coding Night -- Build your own Digital Garden
Hosted by: Roos Groothuizen
To hell with boring-ass brainrot scrolling on Instagram, let’s handcode our own sites again, filled with cool pictures, funny texts and cute games. Did you know that’s really easy??
Every month, we get together at .zip to work on our personal sites with HTML, CSS and Javascript. When we get stuck on difficult coding challenges, we have each other to help out. At the end of the night, we’ll show off our pages, and join each other’s ‘webrings’.
On April 21 we’ll host a very special edition! The event will be hosted at two locations at the same time!! Wow ✨
Join us live at .zip on 1e Pijnackerstraat 75, Rotterdam, or via video portal at Sickhouse, Oldenzaalsestraat 128, Enschede!
Special guest Kiara Jouhanneau will talk about her ongoing research and the connection between magical thinking, web craft and rabbit holing — and how they can counter online fascism and homogenisation.

︎︎︎ About Neocities
Neocities is a modern revival of the early web’s GeoCities: a free, user-friendly platform for creating and hosting personal websites. It embraces the DIY spirit of the early internet, allowing users to build custom sites using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript without ads or corporate restrictions.
Its simplicity, nostalgia, and focus on creativity have made it especially popular among artists, indie developers, and those seeking an alternative to social media’s algorithmic feeds.
Recently, Neocities has gained traction as a hub for digital self-expression, retro web aesthetics, and communities prioritizing personal ownership over centralized platforms.

︎︎︎ About Roos
Roos Groothuizen is the co-founder of .zip and hosts Neocities Coding Night. During the day, she is a media artist who cares about digital human rights. In her own practice, and within the art collective Telemagic, she researches the human side of invisible algorithms, information filters, and unfair distribution. Who is in control over what we perceive?

Speculate Futures meet up:
Technology in Public Spaces
Hosted by: Anouk Geenen, Julieta Matos Castano in collaboration with Esmeralde Marsman and .zipper Louisa Teichmann.
How can we reimagine technology to help strengthen connections between people and the places they live?
Let’s explore that question together on 2 April during our meetup.
This is the third and closing event in a series where we reflect on and reimagine the connection between technology and community life in cities.
During the first event, an unconference that took place on 27 January, we came together to explore questions and issues participants experience around public technology. During the 'unhackathon' that followed on 27 February, participants redesigned public technologies around two of the previously identified topics and created new speculative technologies.
During our meetup on 2 April, we will introduce two speculative technology concepts that emerged:
- One of them imagines a public transport experience where your daily tram or metro ride becomes a shared space for urban poetry, questions, sounds and stories created by fellow travellers.
- The other explores how technology could help people share experiences of public space, as if the city itself had senses that could capture and transmit moments to others.
These two concepts are speculative prompts to help us think differently about how technology could support connection and care for place and for each other.
This time, we will explore these ideas, reflect on them, and imagine the kinds of futures they might inhabit and create. We will do so in an active format, where we will specifically focus on placing the discussion in the context of Rotterdam. What could we learn from them about how we design technology and community life today?
You do not need to have attended the previous events to join. If you enjoy inspiring conversations with a diverse group of people, imaginative thinking, and an informal and creative atmosphere, we would love to see you there on 2 April!
